General

A medium shrub common in shrub swamps and forested wetlands. Tolerates partial shade and various soil moistures.

Plant Description

Medium sized shrub growing 6-12'. Multi-stemmed and roundish. Obovate, coarsely serrate, opposite leaves. Clusters of small white flowers bloom May to June and give way to clusters of navy-blue fruits. Smooth, straight stems with serrated leaves.

According to BRIT - Native American Ethnobotany Database, the Ojibwa used the bark of this species as in ingredient in "kinnikkinnick" which is a smoking mixture of different herbs.
